Sustainable efforts to pass on Miyajima to the future
We aim to protect this miraculous cycle wherein people live together with gods and nature.
The Miyajima Visitor Tax we receive from you is used to develop a sustainable tourism community, including environmental improvement and citizen activities to pass on historic culture.
Four efforts for our future
Connecting Natural Environments
Reducing the burden on the natural environment to conserve rare ecosystems
Achieving a zero carbon city
In April of 2023, Miyajima was recognized by the Ministry of the Environment as the first "zero carbon park" in the Chugoku-Shikoku/Kyushu regions. We installed water servers and performed verification experiments for the "green slow mobility" transportation method using electric vehicles, aiming to eliminate plastic use and reduce CO2 emissions.
Preserving wetlands home to the Miyajima dragonfly through the Ramsar Convention
The "Miyajima dragonfly," a subspecies endemic to Miyajima, only lives in rare tidal marshes, and it has been designated as an endangered species. In order to protect its habitat, the coast along the southwest of Miyajima has been registered as a Ramsar Convention wetland. As preservation activities, we engage in cleaning and public awareness activities.
